A Lee County youth, Claire Ledford, 11, is undertaking a project that will benefit both needy people throughout the world and homeless and at-risk veterans in North Carolina. She has enlisted friends across the state to help collect 2,500 shoes by the end of the month. She is currently 900 pairs of shoes shy of her goal.
She wants your shoes — the ones in your closet you never wear, maybe because they don’t fit any more, maybe they’re out of style.
Locally, shoes may be dropped off at Allstate Insurance, 817 S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro; Allstate Office, Siler Crossing, 102 Siler Crossing, Suite 2, Siler City; or Elmore Furniture Company, 15 Dawn Road, Pinehurst.
The donated shoes will be repaired as needed, shipped overseas by a charity called Funds2Orgs, and distributed to help the needy. Funds2Orgs will pay the local charity that collects the shoes. Ledford has selected the Veterans Leadership Council of North Carolina as the charity to receive the money involved.
