The VA created the Veterans Choice Program to help reduce delays by scheduling appointments with private facilities when the VA couldn’t provide treatment in a timely manner. The KVUE Defenders uncovered veterans still facing problems.
To qualify, veterans must live more a 40-mile driving distance from a VA facility or are unable to schedule an appointment within 30 days.
Henry Taylor signed up for the program a few months ago after he said the VA wouldn’t schedule a MRI to identify severe shoulder pain. He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for five years.
“That very intense tear-bringing pain you would from hitting your elbow, that’s what I ended up having 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Taylor.
