Paws of War Aims to Rescue Smokey, a Beloved Cat Saved by U.S. Army Soldier Overseas, Ahead of National Cat Day on October 29th

As National Cat Day approaches on October 29th, Paws of War highlights the urgent mission to rescue Smokey, a cat whose life was saved by U.S. Army Sergeant Avery while deployed overseas. Smokey, found as a tiny kitten, has become an integral part of Sergeant Avery’s life, providing comfort and companionship in a challenging environment. Now, Paws of War is seeking the support of compassionate individuals to ensure Smokey’s safe passage to America, where she will be reunited with Sergeant Avery and his family.

Sergeant Avery while deployed overseas discovered Smokey at just two weeks old, vulnerable and alone. Unable to leave her behind, he took on the responsibility of caring for her, forming a deep bond that has brought him solace during his deployment. “Smokey is a very special girl who has given me a new outlook on life here. There is nothing for her when I leave. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of her being left behind,” he shares. “I don’t know how I could explain to my son, Dustin, who loves her already, that his friend can’t come home with me.”

Unfortunately, Smokey cannot survive alone in her hostile environment. Homeless and abandoned animals often face starvation, dehydration, and numerous other dangers. Without Sergeant Avery to protect her, Smokey’s future is bleak. Recognizing this urgent need, Paws of War’s War-Torn Pups and Cats program is mobilizing to rescue her.

The War-Torn Pups and Cats program reunites military personnel with the animals they rescued and bonded with while serving overseas at no cost to our heroes. While the financial investment is significant, the relief, comfort, and joy this program provides our soldiers is immeasurable. To date, more than 600 dogs and cats have safely reached the U.S., becoming loyal companions to their heroic service members in their forever homes. This program truly epitomizes the slogan, “Helping Both Ends of the Leash.”
