Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ Far-Reaching Bill Offers Veterans Options For Private Health Insurance & Care

Last week, Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R., Wash.)—the fourth-highest-ranking member of the House of Representatives—introduced pioneering and well-crafted legislation that would dramatically improve veterans’ health care in the United States. For those veterans who have been waiting in line to receive care from a VA facility, it comes not a moment too son.

The 58-page discussion draft, entitled the “Caring for our Heroes in the 21st Century Act,” would preserve traditional veterans’ health care for those who prefer it. But veterans who prefer to seek private health hire vetscoverage or private health care will have the option do receive a “health insurance support” payment to purchase private health coverage and build a health savings account.

Veterans eligible for Medicare will receive funding for a “Medigap” plan that would defray costs of Medicare’s premiums, deductibles, and co-pays.
