The U.S. Army has the motto “This We’ll Defend,” and they strive to live up to protecting and serving no matter where they go. One soldier, U.S. Army First Sergeant Ríos, put this into action, rescuing a little puppy that would have otherwise not survived. While he is trying to save the puppy overseas, Paws of War and the community need to step up to get the dog he fell in love with safely to the soldier’s home in the U.S.

“This soldier needs our help to get Beuhring to America, and we will do everything we can to make it happen,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “We can do rescue missions like this, but they are complicated and costly. We always need the help of people in the community to provide the necessary financial support to see this case through.”

First Sergeant RĂos spotted the tiny puppy when she was desperately trying to keep up with a larger pack of dogs. She was terrified of being left behind in the Middle Eastern desert, so she ran as fast as possible. Failing to keep up, she gave up and lay next to the side of the road and watched helplessly as they went on without her. It was only a matter of time before she would be in danger, left there alone and would most likely die.

In the distance, the soldier spotted a convoy headed right toward the puppy, and she trembled in fear. The vehicles stopped, and Ríos stepped out, prompting the puppy to run toward him. He scooped her up, held her frail body, and instantly fell in love, naming her Beuhring after a base in Kuwait. He became her protector, and she became a source of light and joy during his deployment while being so far from home.

As his deployment was coming to an end, he reached out to Paws of War for help to save his best friend. He couldn’t bear leaving her behind or losing her from his life. The two maintain a strong bond, and to have them break it would be devastating for both and lead to starvation and death for Beuhring. He is working with Paws of War to help save his pup. The rescue efforts are underway. but there is still a long way to go.

“Beuhring ran right up to me, and the adorable freckles on her nose were the first thing I noticed after how small she was. I was instantly smitten, but I knew there was no way she’d make it alone. I gave her water and brought her to the base to nurse her back to health; she grew stronger daily, and so did our bond,” said U.S. Army First Sergeant RĂos. “Now, if I go anywhere without her, she cries till I return. It’s so dangerous here for a dog like her, and I can give her a safe life if she can make it to America. I wasn’t prepared for how much she would come to mean to me, but now she’s family, and I can’t bear the thought of leaving her to fend for herself when I return back home. I know she can’t survive here.”

The Middle East is a harsh place for cats and dogs to be left roaming. Without proper care and being moved to America, Beuhring will be left to fend for herself there, which will lead to a certain death.
