walking sticks

By Linda Braden

Supporting his fellow veterans is tops on the list for Steve Newman, of Townsend.

Newman, who served in Vietnam, puts his talents to work creating walking sticks and canes for any veteran who wants one, presenting them totally free of charge as a way to let them know they don’t walk alone. The gifts are distributed through the Veterans Affairs Office at the Blount County Courthouse and at Gene Webb Woodcarvings showroom on East Lamar Alexander Parkway in Townsend.

“We’ve been doing walking sticks since last Christmas,” Newman explained. At the time of the interview in early October, more than 550 of the gifts had been presented through the VA office and another 300 at Webb Woodcarvings. Six hundred sticks have been given to 4th Division veterans and their families during reunions Newman has coordinated for them in Townsend.
