The Aug. 23 front-page article “Veterans feeling war’s toll see an ally in Trump” unfortunately highlighted a handful of opinions as representative of veterans overall. The opinions of “most veterans” and “lots of guys,” as voiced by veterans in the article, bolstered the assertion that “many” Iraq and Afghanistan front-line veterans stand behind Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
The veteran preference for Mr. Trump correlates with that of the underlying demographic from which they are drawn. The article emphasized the opinions of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, stating that “among many of the people who have actually fought in this country’s wars, particularly on the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan, Trump offers a refreshing alternative to 15 years of seemingly endless conflict.” There is good reason to doubt that Iraq and Afghanistan veterans prefer Mr. Trump, especially given his low polling among millennials.
