Of the more than 330,000 veterans in Louisiana, more than 37,000 reside in the Caddo-Bossier area, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Overton Brooks VA Center has provided housing to more than 500 veterans since 2014, said spokeswoman Shannon Arledge.

“It’s unfortunate that anyone is homeless, but the VA has taken steps to ensure that veterans have a home or at least a shelter,” Arledge said. “Any new episode of homelessness that is identified in our community will be rare, brief and non-recurring.”

The center conducts street outreach throughout the year to identify and count homeless veterans. It then helps place hire vetsthose veterans into housing or shelters. Chocka Sullivan, Health Care for Homeless Veterans coordinator, said the VA also has a hotline number, a community-based clinic and residential and independent living programs available to veterans.

“We try to meet the veterans where they are,” Sullivan said. “The whole intent is to take care of the veterans completely.”
