A special conference at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway celebrated Indiana’s female veterans.

More than 200 active, reserve and veteran women came out today for the 2016 Indiana Women Veterans’ Conference.

The event hosted by the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs featured workshops and information sessions on VA health care benefits, resume building, positive parenting and self-defense.

More than 33,000 women veterans live here in Indiana and often times many of them are unaware of the benefits and resources available to them.

“What a lot of women do is they don’t realize they are veterans or they don’t accept they are hire vetsveterans, so what this is doing is opening the doors to that, saying not only are you a veteran, but the person sitting next to you is also a veteran and it brings that all together,” said Laura McKee,  State Women Veteran’s Coordinator.
