Veterans aren’t the only ones whose claims are mishandled and delayed at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Private medical practices that treat veterans on behalf of the VA get the same runaround when they ask the government for payment.

Data show that in fiscal year 2015, the Veterans Health Administration processed only about two-thirds of payment requests on time, according to a recent report from the Government Accountability Office.

The processing rate likely is even lower, auditors concluded, because of problems with the VA’s data.

Medical practices told auditors they repeatedly had to contact the agency about pending claims and often had to hire vetsresubmit documents.

This is a big problem because the government wants to increase the amount of veterans’ health care outsourced to the private sector. If providers get tired of fighting for payment, they might not participate.
