Jeff Barnes, the director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, has resigned in the wake of a stinging audit that showed workers at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans failed to properly care for residents.

Barnes offered his resignation to Gov. Rick Snyder, who called the findings of failing to properly investigate allegations of abuse and neglect and inadequate staffing “deeply troubling.”

“Jeff is passionate about helping his fellow veterans,” said Snyder, who created the agency and appointed Barnes in 2013. “I know he is as troubled by these findings as I am. A new leadership team is in place, which I am relying on to address the audit.”hire vets

Barnes will be replaced on an interim basis by James Redford, a former Kent County Circuit Court judge who has served as Snyder’s chief legal counsel since 2015. Redford is a veteran U.S. Navy reservist who served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps for more than 20 years.
