Nearly 2,000 Veterans Affairs employees in New Jersey received a total $1.75 million in performance bonuses at a time when VA facilities across the country were under fire for long patient wait times.

The Lyons campus of the Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System was among 112 VA medical centers flagged in May 2014 for further review and inspection for questionable scheduling practices. The VA’s Office of Accountability Review followed up with an audit there and found no improper practices.

Nationally, the Department of Veterans Affairs doled out more than $142 million in bonuses to executives and employees for performance in 2014, even as scandals over veterans’ health care and other issues racked the agency.

As one of his final acts last year before resigning, then-VA Secretary Eric Shinseki hire vetsannounced he was suspending
bonuses in the wake of revelations that VA employees had falsified records to meet wait-time targets – ostensibly as part of efforts to secure the extra pay.
