Three Columbus area residents and a former Olympic gold medalist are among 15 inductees for the 2015 Georgia Military Veterans’ Hall of Fame ceremony in Columbus next month.
During the Nov. 7 ceremony at the St. Luke Ministry Center, the inductees will join 34 other veterans the nonprofit organization has recognized since it was created in February 2013 to honor some of the more than 770,000 Georgia military veterans. The event recognizes veterans who have contributed greatly to the United States while serving on active duty or in a Reserve component.
Retired Army Col. Paul Longgrear, founder and director of the Hall of Fame, said the inductees were selected from 46 nominees, the largest group in the history of the organization.
“This country is ripe for heroes,” Longgrear said. “Everybody is mad at what in the world is going on. Everybody can appreciate a soldier and these are the creme of the crop.”
From the Chattahoochee Valley are: Army Col. Donald Mathis McKay Jr. and Navy Machinist Mate 1st Class S.O. Swygert, both of Columbus, and Army Col. Carton Gerald Savory of Hamilton.
