Since the war, he worked in a remodeling business and worked with air conditioners. He worked in sales and at one point owned his own business, but life got tough, he said.
“It seemed like every time you turn around somebody is taking your money and throwing you on the streets,” Bryan said.
That wasn’t the case Friday as Bryan and more than 500 other veterans crowded into Veterans Memorial Coliseum for Portland Veterans Stand Down. The event was a chance for vets to look for jobs, housing, food, vaccinations for their pets, medical services, haircuts and camaraderie.
A similar event five years ago connected Bryan with federal Veterans Administration workers and other local nonprofits. Today, he said, he’s got a roof over his head and lives with his son, who served in Afghanistan.
