It wasn’t always that way. He said post-traumatic stress disorder caused by his tour with the Army in Iraq in 2007 and 2008 left him with nightmares every night.
But for Murphy and the other amateur scuba divers who gathered at Deer Creek Reservoir Tuesday, relief from the physical and mental pain caused by combat trauma can be found underwater.
“I’ve been able to quit most of my meds and I’ve felt better than I have probably since Iraq,” Murphy said.
The divers are students with Dive Alliance, a nonprofit organization partnered with the Utah Veteran Affairs
Hospital in Salt Lake City dedicated to giving career training and diving certification to veterans at no cost to them.
