A 34-year U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan called Sunday on his fellow vets to join him in a new mission — on the streets of Chicago.
Robert L. Davis, commander of American Legion Post 800, wants them to help protect city streets that have been ravaged by gun violence.
“This demands a response,” Davis said. “It demands a call to service. And I’m asking the veterans in the community to answer that call.”
Davis stood outside his American Legion building in the Gresham neighborhood, where two of state Sen. Mattie Hunter’s nephews crashed their SUV after being fatally shot over the Fourth of July weekend. A 7-year-old boy was also fatally shot that weekend in Humboldt Park.
