The St. Louis County Council is poised to adopt legislation to designate a branch of the judicial system to provide treatment as an alternative to jail time for veterans who have run afoul of the law.
The first step, a resolution supporting the establishment of a Veterans Treatment Court, received unanimous approval at the Tuesday council meeting.
Councilman Mark Harder, R-7th District, will place a bill authorizing the court on the council agenda next week.
Final passage is expected in early August.
With its adoption, St. Louis County will become the eighth jurisdiction in Missouri with a courtroom set aside specifically to address issues connected to past military service.
