In neighborhoods across the region, fireworks have already started to light up the night sky in anticipation of Independence Day.
For some combat veterans, the unexpected blasts can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder, said John Wryobeck, a clinical psychologist and associate professor in psychiatry at the University of Toledo.
“Most would say, ‘I know it’s just fireworks, but emotionally I feel like I have to do something,’ ” Mr. Wryobeck said.
For many veterans who have seen combat, community-organized fireworks events likely wouldn’t trigger any response because the fireworks are anticipated, but random explosions, like someone might experience in war, could set off an involuntary response.
