The conversation between Dennis Hitchcock and the military veteran standing at the booth in front of him was going just fine. That is, until Hitchcock asked the man if he knew what LGBT stood for and was all about.
Then things quickly went south.
The veteran had picked up the free package of Skittles that Hitchcock was giving away at the monthly health and service fair at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Chalmers P. Wylie Ambulatory Care Center on Wednesday. But he threw the candy back at Hitchcock, saying, “I don’t want those. I’m not gay.”
Hitchcock, sitting at a table with a sign hanging on the front that read “Columbus VA LGBT veterans and employees,” was disappointed but not surprised. It has been a slow and steady climb toward understanding, acceptance and equal treatment for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community who have served in the military.
