The award from the Disabled American Veterans of Rhode Island recognizes Sen. Walter Felag for championing legislation designed to assist the reintegration of returning veterans.

The Disabled American Veterans of Rhode Island organization has named Sen. Walter Felag Jr., the Legislator of the Year for 2015. The award was presented to Felag at the RIDAV 80th annual department convention held April 18 in Warwick by DAV national commander Ronald Hope and David Smith, commander of the DAV department of Rhode Island.

The plaque presented to Felag recognizes his “continuous advocacy for veterans” and for championing a package of veterans’ legislation, The Rhode Back Home, that was designed to assist the reintegration of returning veterans into civilian life by increasing access to benefits, creating employment opportunities and providing educational support and job training.

The multi-bill “Rhode Back Home” legislative initiative was approved by the General Assembly and enacted into lawhire vets during the 2013 legislative session. It included creation of a 13-member Veterans’ Services Strategic Plan advisory committee and production and distribution of a Division of Veterans’ Affairs “Pocket Guide of Veterans’ Services.”
