13,500 Michigan veterans wait for care during VA system overhaul

More than 13,500 Michigan veterans had healthcare appointments delayed at least 31 days at Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics over the last six months, violating the agency’s goal for timely treatment, new federal data shows.

The 2 percent waiting rate of 674,821 appointments at the 27 centers in Michigan pales in comparison to the government system’s worst offenders, where former service members can be delayed up to 20 percent of the time, an MLive review found.

But the lag time at any level remains a touchpoint nationally as the department seeks to overhaul a system that too often lets veterans twist in the wind while seeking necessary medical attention.

President Barack Obama signed the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act last hire vetsAugust, providing $16.3 billion to hire doctors, open more clinics and build a program that allows vets facing long delays or long drives to get care from a private-sector doctors.
