After reading Carl Asszony’s recent on Veteran’s Property Tax Relief, I’d like to add my thoughts on this subject. As Mr. Asszony pointed out, many states approved discounts far greater than the $250 currently awarded to the veterans of New Jersey and with far fewer stipulations.
A veteran who served during peacetime is not eligible, nor has one who did not serve in a “war zone.” An Airman serving during the Cold War, having spent an entire year in Greenland, maintaining a fleet of B-52 bombers carrying atomic warheads, does not qualify; neither does the soldier patrolling the DMZ after the Korean War ended.
These are but two examples of how many veterans are left out of the state’s vet benefit.
As a Korean War veteran, my taxes have seen the reduction since purchasing a home in Milltown. Many of my fellow veterans living in states with considerably lower property taxes tell of much larger tax breaks and with less restrictions.
